The Heart of Owl Creek
Owl Creek runs through Coryell County, Texas, winding its way toward Lake Belton. It’s a place rich in history, once home to the
Tonkawa, Lipan Apache, Kiowa, and Comanche peoples. Later, settlers came, and Fort Gates stood nearby to protect those bold
enough to call the Texas frontier home.
For my family, Owl Creek has always been more than a place on the map—it’s where our roots run deep. My ancestors settled here
in the 1850s, and the creek became a backdrop to generations of fishing trips, campfire stories, and lifelong memories. As kids in the
1950s, my brothers and I spent countless weekends along its banks, soaking up the simple joys of life.

Back in the day, an outpost was a lifeline—a place where folks could gather supplies, share stories, and find a little safety in the
